More things I have learnt from physio - mainly notes to self. I suspect [personal profile] hagar_972 and [personal profile] taennyn may have useful experience here, where I'm just starting out on the same journey they've already been on.

Muscles in the thigh - VMO, lateralis, the big quad one, the sartorius one across, adductors on the inside, abductors on the outside. VMO needs extra strengthening due to hypermobility. The small stabilising muscles tend to give up, then the big muscles compensate, and that's why my hamstrings get tight all the time. Then the hip/bum ones like glute max and glute mede also need help, particularly the latter.

Making sure things activate in the right order is hard. If the lateralis activates before the VMO instead of at the same time, then my kneecap slides sideways and that's one of the reasons it hurts. Trying to activate the VMO first will retrain it so they both go at the same time.

fic! (Tony Stark/May Parker)

This is the first fic I've written in ages. It made me super happy to write. I pulled a writing all-nighter and went to bed at 4 a.m. one day!

My tastes have not changed at all in the interim, obviously. I am deeply, horribly in love with Marisa Tomei!May Parker. The movie made her an interesting woman full of life instead of a sweet, grandmother shaped cardboard cutout. And there must be so much going on in her brain during Peter's transition to spiderhood - it's not just her adopted son being out late at night, it's that he's sneaking out and lying to her less than a year after her husband was murdered in the street.

In fact, the more I think about it, the more I am highly skeptical she never found the spider suit. I mean, worried American parent + kid recovering from traumatic event + kid disappearing and coming home wounded = I suspect Kid is in a gang and/or involved with drugs. I guarantee you she has ransacked his room at least once looking for drug paraphernalia. And the ceiling hatch is such an obvious hiding spot!

Interestingly, this is not my rarest rarepair fic. That honor still belongs to the Rita Sue/Jonesy fic I wrote for Carnivale fandom, which to this day remains an n of 1.

Anyway, story.

There was just a fire alarm at my building. It lasted fifteen minutes. About half of that I spent cornering Joey, locking him in the carrier, and hauling his butt downstairs. Now, he is offended by the entire affair and shunning me.

I can't decide whether to go to Vividcon or not. Since next year is the last, I feel like whatever fandom flame I'd hoped to nurture— Hmm. Okay, I realize this may seem weird, but I feel almost like Vividcon is now best left to the community that "built that city." I have to decide soon—I haven't bought a ticket yet.

I had my Year One Transplant Anniversary Bone Marrow Biopsy today. Ouch.

P.S. Call your senators about healthcare.

Your first wheelchair by [personal profile] kaberett was brilliant for helping me upgrade from Shopmobility's hire chair to something designed for active use and being pushed by the person in it rather than a carer.

The Spinal Cord Injury Empowerment Project by the University of Washington has excellent videos on wheelchair skills. The American accent and cheery tone grates after a while, but it's very useful info and nicely bite-sized.

Fanlore is recruiting gardeners to help us with Fanlore!

Do you like writing about fandom? Gardeners are editors who work on Fanlore and take additional responsibilities regarding the wiki’s maintenance. In addition to adding content themselves, they make sure text isn’t deleted indiscriminately and tidy up after other editors, to help new content better fit the wiki’s guidelines. They can also participate in internal discussions about Fanlore events, policies, and documentation. No technical experience is required—you just need to know and love Fanlore, both as a user and an editor. If that sounds like you, come and join us!

Five Things an OTW Volunteer Said

"I’ve used fanfic archives, Yahoo Groups, LiveJournal, Fanfiction.net, AO3, and tumblr among others so I know just how important what OTW does is for fandom. I’ve seen the good (even great), bad, and ugly that can from fandom and I still keep coming back for more. I can’t get enough of seeing and reading other fans’ passion for the things that I love."

In Five Things, graphics volunteer Rachel G discusses what she creates for the OTW and what she likes about the results: https://goo.gl/UgBcsY
